Discover New Zealand in the Global Environment

Wellington, your capital, is proud to present New Zealand's

ecoglobe

Welcome to ecoglobe, your ecology world.

ecoglobe is your world, with a diameter of 20 meters, filled with interactive displays about New Zealand and our place in the global environment. ecoglobe informs us about the local and global ecology, that is the balance of human activities and nature. Slowly revolving, ecoglobe shows different views of New Zealand and the Earth's continents.

You enter ecoglobe through the trunk of our national tree, the Kauri, a symbol of strength and longevity. Revolving stairs and a round elevator for the handicapped take you up to the center of our globe. At a level of ten meters you exit the Kauri trunk and find yourself back home under its shady crown. Through our well-known New Zealand scenery we step into the world environment and learn about sustainability, that is our human impact on the Earth. Pathways along the ecoglobe's walls lead to different levels of exhibition. You visit the skies complete with greenhouse gases and ozone layer, as well as the world beneath us with its mineral resources and water life.

Current ecologic developments are explained with their interconnected impacts in all aspects of our lives and nature. You find your worries and questions displayed and translated into visions of real solutions. Issues like population growth, human well-being, economic welfare, depletion of resources, pollution, climate change, protection of wildlife and fisheries, and organic agriculture are presented in clear language and vivid images. The information is based on the highest standard of factual ecologic and economic knowledge, and prepared in cooperation with renowned and absolutely independent scientists.

ecoglobe is equipped with state-of-the-art public information facilities. All interactive computer, video and internet terminals are absolutely user-friendly, suitable for all visitors.

ecoglobe's qualified staff is available for answering any questions. The ecoglobe base has an ecologic resource centre with library, study and conference facilities. A coffee lounge invites you to relax and reflect on the ecoglobe experience by organically grown goodies from the land.

ecoglobe takes great pride in using New Zealand design, skilled workmanship and products for its construction and equipment. The ecoglobe's laminated wood structure, for instance, is made from New Zealand plantation timber. The equipment is whenever possible New Zealand made and of the highest quality. The spirit that supports ecoglobe protects our heritage. We visualise a New Zealand environment that can be maintained into the next century and far beyond.
