[yin yang] ecoglobe - Traffic issues
Traffic is a major sustainability factor. It includes the mobility of people for work and leisure, as well as the transportation goods.
In urban centres traffic congestion is a well recognised problem and most cities nowadays pursue an active policy of public transport promotion. Geneva is a case in point.

In March 1996 108,857 Swiss citizens asked in people's initiative that motorised trafic in Switzerland be reduced by 50 percent. The initiative will be brought to the vote in 2000. [hedgehogs with traffic sign (cartoon) 5K]
If accepted by a simple majority, the initiative will become law. The authorities will then have the legal task to takes all necessary measures that will halve motorized traffic over the next ten years. This would be a major step towards more sustainability of our societal structures. These 108'857 Swiss men an women share a vision: the future happens today! The initiative is carried by the incorporated Society "umverkehR" (Retrotraffic). This can be achieved by persistent promotion of public transport, as well as walking and bicycling. Die staatliche Förderung von Car Sharing, Solar- und Elektromobilen verhilft einer neuen, umweltfreundlichen Mobilität zum Durchbruch. (Concise German version: umverkehR)
Hedgehogs are strong supporters of the initiative, together with many people who realise that we can not continue with business as usual.
