Depleted Uranium

Wellington's Evening Post mentioned 'depleted uranium' today, on page 6.
The radioactive material was among the toxic substances emitted after an Israeli cargo jet had crashed into an apartment building in Amsterdam in 1992. Forty-three people died in the accident and many residents and rescuers suffer chronic health problems since. One may wonder for what purpose the jet apparently carried depleted uranium.

ecoglobe also wonders whether the people who decided to make, and now to use shells with depleted uranium in the Balkan war, really understand what they are doing. Would they still take the same decisions if they would know the details?
